I am Kensho Ando, a graduate student of Tokyo University of Technology. I am currently studying sound engineering and user interface, while working as a director in the game development team, “Yack Lab”.

First, I would like to express my gratitude to being given the chance to attend the Tokyo Game Show and be given a studio tour as a member of IGDA Japan's scholarship. It was a very exciting and fulfilling 4 days, where I got to experience many things.

At Ubiquitous Entertainment, the first studio we were given a tour of, I not only learned about content development, but also about the visual programming language MOONBlock, as well as how they carried out research, development, and manufacturing. I have tried enchantMOON on my school's computers before, and felt that the concept was rather interesting. Directly hearing about the concepts and examples of how the company uses it, however, allowed me to understand the company's vision of granting people who have never develop games before, such as children, the ability to develop games.

At LAND HO!, I learned about growing the current mobile game market, and the differences between publishers and developers. They had combined both their console game development team and their mobile game development team, explaining the importance of the increasing potential of nongamers becoming gamers due to the growth of the mobile game industry. In addition, they also talked in-depth about startups in the game industry.

At Aiming, the final studio we visited, they discussed about game design, about various ideas regarding making quick decisions in order to keep up with technological and cultural trends, and also about maintaining the attitude to use the most innovative technology during those times. We also got a glimpse of the studio's current development process from getting to talk with programmers, artists, and various other developers in each department.

At Tokyo Game Show, I attended a whole range of events, including the keynote speech, Sense of Wonder Night (SOWN), the International Party, and the INDIE STREAM FES. SOWN was especially interesting, as it is a goal of our team to be a part of it. Being heavily influenced by the previous year's finalists, "Kyoto", "Lost Toys", and "Museum of Simulation Technology", and wanting to stand on the same stage one day, I could not miss attending this year's either. There were many games with wonderful concepts this year as well, but I was extremely impressed by the winner of the "best presentation award", "PICOLECITTA". It served as a great reminder of how much fun it is to play games with one's friends, particularly in these times when games with an online component are a rising trend. At the International Party, I got to talk with the developer TECO about various things, such as how the Japanese indie game scene should make a big wave, when we could play PICOLECITTA together some time in the future, and about my team working hard to be able to present at next year's SOWN.

The greatest thing I gained from this experience was getting the chance to meet with the other scholars that were accepted this year. Interacting with them, my awareness towards the English language and communication in general greatly changed. Among the 9 scholars, 7 of them were foreigners. Because they mainly spoke English, it was difficult for me to talk to them at first. However, they were very friendly in spite of the fact that I could not really speak English, taking the time to talk to me and try to understand what I was saying. Fortunately, through our common interests in video games, we were able to overcome the language barrier as time went by.

I aim to improve my English skills, so that next time I meet them I can properly talk to them, and be able to communicate with more people.

Lastly, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone at IGDA Japan for the opportunity, to the sponsorship companies, to Mr. Kenji Ono and Ms. Miyuki Ogata for organizing and taking care of us through all 4 days of the scholarship, to Mr. Naoki Matsuyama who interpreted for us during the studio tours, and all the other scholars.
