CEDEC

I first heard about this scholarship from a senior of mine who had participated. I thought that it would be a good chance to get an inside look at the places where games are made, so I decided to apply. Thanks to this scholarship, I was able to exchange ideas with many creators and learn about current studios. It was a very good experience.

The companies visited on this year's studio tour were GREE, TAYUTAU, and GeePlus. Of everything, what surprised me the most was how the atmosphere of the rooms and the creators while they made games were different. There are harmonious studios, quiet studios where one can concentrate, and so on. I am very happy to have been able to learn things one would normally not know about unless seen first hand.

GREE
The first thing that hit me when I walked inside was how modern the interior decorating was. I thought that the indirect lighting in the hallway connecting the rooms was impressive and cool. It was enough to make me unconsciously look down.

GREE's motto of “games as a part of internet services” left an impression on me. It is a fitting outlook for a company with such a strong online presence. Services can be selected based on the development organization of each project team, and the tests to eliminate obstacles to game development were fascinating. In addition, the tech community was lively, the study meetings took place quite frequently, and the employees' motivation was managed well. I felt that the true power of the company is the environment they create that encourages the employees to work at their best.

TAYUTAU
This is a company that primarily develops smartphone games. The interior had the air of an office. The studio's atmosphere was a bright one, as if you could hear slight laughter. Each desk bore a nameplate for the owner. This is a good idea, as it means when someone is absent, there is no need to look up their desk in the name register. Incidentally, the final company visited, GeePlus, has also adopted this method. Perhaps there are many companies that use nameplates.

TAYUTAU’s mission statement is the frank “to unite the world in peace”. I think the company atmosphere was created to further this ideal. The success of a team depends heavily on how easy it is for the members to communicate. The company arranged for us to listen to comments from some new employees, and I learned that at the beginning, everyone runs into problems during development that collide with their expectations and desires for a game.

GeePlus
The last stop on the tour was GeePlus. The atmosphere in the company was bright, giving the impression that the employees work in a carefree manner. While the outline of the company was being explained, I thought to myself that the president was an interesting, funny person. Before getting into the main issue, his behavior was skilled and there were many points in his speech that I agreed with, so listening was very informative. His method of dealing with slight gaffes, pulling in his listeners with the way he talked, and satisfying his audience spoke to his professionalism. The company's goal is “to create smiles”. They make games to make people smile. In addition, the lecture on evoking emotion through functionality was very interesting. It was clear from the focus on adaptability that GeePlus is ambitious in taking on new challenges. I think being able to speak freely in meetings is important for creative teamwork.

CEDEC
As this was the first CEDEC I have participated in, I attended not knowing what to expect. Over the three days, I was greatly inspired. This was because I was surrounded by many creators from game development companies. It was also interesting to have them join our groups during the sessions. I had thought that there would be several stern people from the major companies, but because they spoke to us without caring we were students, I was able to talk with them without feeling overly nervous. While listening to the sessions during CEDEC was valuable, truthfully it was Developers' Night at the end of the event that was most important for me. It was a chance for me to easily speak with professionals about my goals, presentation, and concerns.

Because of this scholarship, I was able to have a rare experience. From now on, I plan to actively participate in game industry events. Finally, I want to thank Mr. Yoshihiro Kishimoto of Tokyo Engineering University, Mr. Makoto Gotou of Matchlock, and Mr. Yoshiki Toda of Square Enix for coming to speak during the CEDEC midday break. I will devote myself every day to making good use of all the advice I have received. (Tokyo Polytechnic University, Atsushi Shokei)
